The Challenges of Reaching East Africa

Across East Africa, national Christian missionaries work tirelessly to provide spiritual care and humanitarian support within refugee camps. In South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, and Somalia, these dedicated individuals face a complex web of challenges that test their resilience and commitment daily.

One of the most pressing difficulties is the sheer scale of need. The region hosts millions of displaced people fleeing conflict, famine, and persecution. In Uganda alone, over a million South Sudanese refugees have sought shelter, creating sprawling settlements where missionaries struggle to reach many of those requiring even basic humanitarian assistance. The overwhelming numbers mean that even well-resourced ministries can only serve a fraction of those in need, leading to difficult decisions about where to focus limited efforts.

Security concerns present another significant barrier. In Somalia, where al-Shabaab maintains influence over large territories, Christian workers face direct threats to their safety. Even in relatively stable Kenya and Uganda, refugee camps can become sites of ethnic tension or criminal activity. National missionaries from the region must navigate these dangers while maintaining their presence among vulnerable populations, often without the security resources available to international organizations.

Resource limitations compound these challenges. Unlike their Western counterparts, national missionaries typically operate with minimal funding and little institutional support. Beyond the continuing need for adequate transportation to make arduous journeys to remote refugee camps, there is an overwhelming lack of basic humanitarian aid—including food and clean water—to meet needs once they arrive. Bibles, discipleship materials, and educational materials for the programs they run are also in constant short supply.

While the missionaries serving with the Advance networks from Uganda and Kenya receive greatly appreciated financial and material resources from their sending church networks and Stateside partners, they, too, are seeking opportunities to establish micro-businesses and strengthen partnerships. These efforts help create sustainability for their families and provide resources for their ministry of Gospel advancement through care, evangelism, and church planting.

Cultural and religious tensions also create obstacles. In camps hosting diverse populations, missionaries work across sensitive ethnic and religious lines. In predominantly Muslim areas of Somalia and northern Kenya, open evangelism can provoke hostility and endanger both missionaries and potential converts. Building trust requires patience, cultural intelligence, and a willingness to serve in extreme conditions.

The spiritual and emotional toll deserves recognition as well. National missionaries witness profound suffering daily, from malnutrition and disease to the trauma carried by those who have fled violence. Most lack access to counseling support or opportunities for respite, increasing their risk of burnout and compassion fatigue.

Despite these formidable challenges, Advance missionaries and other national partners continue their work throughout the region.
